DEME Group: Leading Belgium's Dredging Industry to Global Excellence

DEME, a prominent Belgian dredging company, has been at the forefront of shaping the nation's significance as a global market leader in dredging works. DEME is also a leading contractor in the fields of offshore energy, environmental remediation and marine infrastructure. It also engages in concessions activities in offshore wind, marine infrastructure, green hydrogen, and deep-sea mineral harvesting. The company can build on more than 145 years of experience and is a front runner in innovation and new technologies.

DEME’s vision is to work towards a sustainable future by offering solutions for global challenges: a rising sea level, a growing population, the reduction of emissions, polluted rivers and soils and the scarcity of mineral resources. DEME can rely on about 5,000 highly skilled professionals and operates one of the largest and most technologically advanced fleets in the world.
DEME has participated in many high-profile projects, also here in Singapore.

Dredging plays a pivotal role in excavating and cleansing waterways, restoring land, and supporting coastal development. It meets the demand for larger vessels by creating new deep-sea harbors and provides additional space for coastal urbanization. Dredging companies address rising sea levels through land transformation, constructing crucial seawalls, and creating new living spaces. They also play a vital role in harbor maintenance and accommodating larger transport vessels. Additionally, these companies engage in mineral exploration and extraction from underwater deposits. Beyond economic gains, they actively contribute to environmental preservation by removing pollutants, safeguarding shores, supporting offshore activities, and facilitating oil, gas, and renewable energy projects. The dredging industry's dominance by Dutch and Belgian companies elevates its significance for these economies.

BLCC members seized a unique opportunity to visit DEME's flagship TSHD Congo River during its stopover in Singapore for maintenance and repair works. The visit commenced with an informative introduction to DEME, the operational principles of a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, and a detailed overview of the vessel's specifications. Following a safety induction, attendees donned their PPE and embarked on an awe-inspiring journey aboard this engineering marvel.
Gratitude to Jorim Vandevoorde for orchestrating this exceptional visit to the Deme hopper dredger—an invaluable experience for our members.
